There is a specific kind of frustration that hits when you arrive at a reformer class only to realise you left your grip socks at home. This checklist covers everything — from the absolute essentials to the extras that experienced practitioners always have on hand.
The Non-Negotiables
Grip Socks
The most important item in your studio bag. Most studios will not let you on the reformer without them, and many sell pairs at reception for significantly more than the retail price. Keep a spare pair permanently in your bag so you always have a backup.
Water Bottle
A refillable bottle (at least 500ml, ideally 750ml). Pilates is deceptive — you often do not feel as hot or sweaty as in a spin class, but you are working deeply and need to stay hydrated.
A Small Towel
A personal hand towel for your face and neck. Most studios provide equipment wipes for cleaning the reformer after use.
Strong Recommends
A Change of Clothes
If you are going straight to work or anywhere public after class, fresh clothes make a real difference. Pack a compact outfit that compresses well.
Hair Ties and Bobby Pins
Long hair loose during reformer work is impractical and potentially unsafe near moving parts. Keep two or three hair ties permanently in your bag.
A Post-Class Snack
Reformer pilates depletes your glycogen stores. A small snack within 30 minutes — a handful of nuts, a piece of fruit, a protein bar — supports muscle recovery and prevents an energy crash later.
For Longer Sessions or Retreats
- A resistance band — for warm-up or between-class stretching
- A travel foam roller — for hip flexor and thoracic release
- Dry shampoo — if fitting a class into a busy day without time to wash your hair
The Bag Itself
The ideal pilates studio bag:
- A separate internal pocket or pouch for wet grip socks after class
- At least one accessible external pocket for your phone and keys
- Comfortable carry handles and an optional cross-body strap
- Washable interior
The Post-Class Routine
- Turn your grip socks inside out and air dry before packing them away
- Wipe down your equipment
- Drink the rest of your water
- Eat your snack within 30 minutes
- Note anything you want to work on next session
