A quality pair of grip socks is one of the best investments you will make for your pilates practice. But wash them the wrong way — even once — and the grip that makes them worth wearing begins to break down. Here is exactly how to care for your grip socks so they perform class after class, season after season.
Why the Grip Deteriorates
The non-slip dots or patterns on grip socks are made from silicone or PVC compounds bonded to the fabric. These compounds are durable but vulnerable to three specific things:
- Heat: High-temperature washing and tumble drying soften and degrade the silicone, causing it to lose adhesion and eventually crack or peel off.
- Fabric softener: Softener coats fibres with a lubricating film — the exact opposite of what grip socks are designed to do. Even a single wash with softener noticeably reduces grip performance.
- Agitation: Heavy-duty wash cycles with high spin speeds physically stress the grip compounds and the sock fabric, causing premature wear.
The Right Way to Wash Grip Socks
1. Turn them inside out
Turning your grip socks inside out before washing protects the grip surface from direct contact with other garments and the drum of the machine. It also ensures the interior of the sock — where sweat and bacteria accumulate — gets a thorough clean.
2. Use a cold or cool wash (30°C maximum)
A gentle cycle at 30°C is the safest setting. This temperature is warm enough to clean effectively while cool enough to preserve the elasticity of the fabric and the integrity of the grip compounds.
Avoid 40°C or above. Even occasional hot washes significantly accelerate grip degradation.
3. Use a delicates or gentle cycle
A low-agitation cycle reduces mechanical stress on the grip. If your machine has a "sportswear" setting, that works well too — these cycles are designed for performance fabrics with technical properties.
4. Use a small mesh laundry bag
A mesh laundry bag is one of the best investments for maintaining all your activewear. It keeps grip socks contained, prevents them from snagging on zippers and hooks from other garments, and significantly reduces abrasion during the wash cycle.
5. Skip the fabric softener — always
This is the single most important rule for grip socks. Fabric softener leaves a coating on the fibres that dramatically reduces grip effectiveness. Use a gentle, softener-free detergent. If you want to freshen the fabric, white vinegar in the rinse cycle is a safe and effective alternative.
6. Air dry flat — never tumble dry
Lay your grip socks flat or hang them at room temperature away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Tumble drying, even on a low setting, applies sustained heat and tumbling action that accelerates the breakdown of both the grip and the fabric.
Air drying also helps your socks retain their shape — elastic degrades faster under heat, causing grip socks to lose their snug fit over time.
How Often Should You Wash Them?
Wash grip socks after every wear. Sweat creates the conditions for bacterial growth, and the foot is one of the sweatiest parts of the body. Daily wearers should have a rotation of at least 3–4 pairs so each pair has time to fully dry between washes.
Signs It's Time to Replace Them
Even with perfect care, grip socks do not last forever. Look out for:
- Grip dots that are peeling, cracking or flaking
- Noticeably reduced traction on the reformer or studio floor
- Fabric that has gone thin, pilled or lost its stretch
- Elastication at the cuff that has given out and causes the sock to slip down
With proper care, a high-quality grip sock should last 50–100 washes. Replacing them before they fail completely is better for your safety and your practice.
