Walking into your first reformer pilates class can feel intimidating enough without worrying about whether you have the right gear. The good news: you do not need much. But having the right few things from the start makes a real difference to your comfort, confidence, and progress.
The Non-Negotiables: What You Must Have
Grip Socks
This is the single most important piece of kit for reformer pilates. Most studios require them — bare feet on the carriage are a hygiene issue, and regular socks offer zero traction on the smooth reformer surface. Invest in a pair with full-sole silicone grip coverage before your first class.
What to look for: snug fit, full-sole grip pattern, breathable fabric blend, durable enough for frequent washing. A crew or ankle length works well for most reformer exercises.
Form-Fitting Workout Wear
Loose clothing on a reformer is a safety issue — fabric can catch in the carriage mechanism. Wear fitted leggings and a close-fitting top. Your instructor also needs to see your body alignment to give you useful corrections, so form-fitting clothes genuinely improve your learning curve, especially in early classes.
Nice to Have: Elevate Your Practice
A Studio Bag That Works
You will be changing, sweating, and carrying your grip socks home wet. A compact tote with a separate wet/dry pocket keeps your fresh kit away from your damp post-class socks and helps you stay organised between sessions.
A Grip-Enhanced Resistance Band
Many reformer programmes now incorporate resistance band work for upper body, shoulder stability, and glute activation. Having your own medium-weight resistance band lets you continue these exercises at home between classes — which dramatically accelerates your progress.
A Foam Roller
Reformer pilates works your deep stabilisers hard. A standard-density foam roller (45–90cm) is one of the best recovery tools for releasing tight hip flexors, thoracic stiffness, and IT band tension. Five minutes of rolling before a session improves range of motion; five minutes after speeds recovery.
Building Your Kit Over Time
- Months 1–3: Grip socks, form-fitting clothes, studio bag
- Months 3–6: Second set of grip socks, resistance band, foam roller
- 6+ months: Mat for home practice, additional props based on your specific training goals
The most important investment at every stage is consistently showing up. The right accessories support that — they do not replace it.
